DMACC ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF NEW SOUTHRIDGE FACILITY
The “DMACC Center for Career and Professional Development” set to open Fall 2013.
Officials from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), Southridge owners, Macerich, Warren County Schools, Polk County and the City of Des Moines unveiled detailed plans to create the new DMACC Center for Career and Professional Development.
“This is an exciting collaboration among four DMACC areas that will bring important academic, career and educational services under one roof,” said Rob Denson, President of DMACC. “This collaboration and synergy are part of DMACC’s ongoing commitment to meet the growing needs of students, businesses and communities that we serve.” The Center’s educational components will include:
· DMACC Business Resources (DBR)
DBR provides customized employee training, consulting and training programs to Central Iowa businesses.
· DMACC Continuing Education
DMACC Continuing Education offers non-credit classes for personal and professional development.
· Warren County Career Academy
This is an extension of DMACC’s Career Advantage Program that provides college credit and vocational training to high school students.
· DMACC Success Center
Opened in 2002, the Success Center offers credit classes to students pursuing liberal arts and sciences degree, as well as other educational services including programs for Youth-at-Risk, Adult Basic Education (ABE), English as a Second Language (ESL) and General Education Development (GED) classes.
Denson said the DMACC Success Center, currently located at 800 Porter, has outgrown of its current location. “The College has been looking for a new location for several years. Southridge is a perfect fit,” he said.
The new DMACC Center for Career and Professional Development at Southridge will provide 64,000-square-feet of learning and administrative space.
“We have been working with Macrich and the City of Des Moines for more than a year,” said Denson. “A lot of thought and planning has gone into this facility. The Southridge programs will allow students of all ages to enter the workforce or continue their education at DMACC or at another college or university. Its services will nicely complement our three metro Campuses in Des Moines, West Des Moines and Ankeny.”
Scott McMurray, Macerich Project Manager for Southridge, said there will be tremendous synergy between DMACC and its retail neighbors. “As Southridge continues to evolve and grow with exciting retailers and new energy, adding DMACC to the center was a natural fit. There is no better setting for the campus, and we feel strongly the local community will embrace the new development along with the unique and national brands that call Southridge home.”
Dr. Michael Teigland, superintendent of the Indianola Community School District, has been an active proponent of DMACC’s new Southridge location. “Technical programs have changed so much over the years,” said Teigland. “From what used to be a shop class is now a completely different experience. With new technology and sophisticated equipment, most school districts cannot afford vocational programs today. DMACC will give all Warren County high school students an opportunity to participate in these exciting classes. It’s a win-win for Warren County.”
The DMACC Center for Career and Professional Development at Southridge will initially offer nine career and technical programs including
· Automotive Technology and Auto Collision
· Building Trades
· Criminal Justice
· Health Occupations
· Teacher Academy
· Career Work Experience
· Visual Communications
“I’m amazed at how quickly the renovation of Southridge has taken place,” said Brian Meyer, Des Moines City Councilman. “DMACC, Macerich, and the City of Des Moines - all of the partners have played a crucial role in the success of this project. My hope is that Southridge will become a new community again where people come for an education, they shop, have dinner and enjoy this wonderful place,” added Meyer. He is also confident the project will serve an important anchor for the entire southwest corridor.
Shive Hattery Architecture and Engineering, based in Cedar Rapids, is the design firm. A contractor will be selected in early December with construction starting soon afterwards. Southridge is situated at the crossroads of Army Post Road and SE 14th Street in Des Moines.
Des Moines Area Community College, a public institution serving the educational and career training needs of Iowans, is committed to the lifelong success of its students. As Iowa’s largest two-year college, DMACC offers 153 programs, certificates and transfer degrees, annually serving more than 75,000 credit and noncredit students on six campuses and in five learning centers. Thanks to college-wide innovation, new programs and affordable tuition, DMACC has experienced record growth and is the 15th fastest growing two-year college in America.
